Salonen, le maître du XXème siècle

Le coffret de 61 CD que publie Sony à l’approche de son 60ème anniversaire (le 30 juin prochain) est un exceptionnel hommage à l’art du chef finlandais Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Je ne connais pas d’équivalent discographique à cette somme, qui révèle ce qui fait la singularité de ce musicien : l’incroyable diversité de son répertoire, certes centré sur le XXème siècle, mais ne s’embarrassant d’aucune barrière esthétique ou dogmatique. Qui d’autre que Salonen a osé aborder – et enregistrer – Corigliano et Saariaho, Dallapiccola et Bernard Herrmann, Hindemith et Webern, Ligeti et Richard Strauss, Rachmaninov et Messiaen, Revueltas et Chostakovitch ? Venant d’un chef finnois, ses anthologies Sibelius, Nielsen, Stravinsky, Lutoslawski, sont plus attendues, et ont fait l’objet de rééditions en coffrets séparés.

L’intérêt de ce coffret est aussi de nous rendre des enregistrements qui n’avaient pas bénéficié d’une distribution internationale, les pièces des Suédois Hillborg ou Larsson, ou encore All Rise de Wynton Marsalis, et les propres compositions de Salonen.

Tout est passionnant, même quand les affinités du chef avec certains répertoires ne semblent pas évidentes (Bruckner, R.Strauss ou Haydn). Si je devais mettre l’accent sur deux disques fascinants, ce serait les monographies Revueltas et Magnus Lindberg (exact  contemporain de Salonen, à trois jours près !)
